American Cockroach

The American cockroach is the largest of the house-infesting cockroach. They are reddish-brown in color and grow up to 2 inches. They are found in food processing and storage areas, as well as other types of buildings. They prefer warm (70 degrees plus) and moist areas but can survive lower temperatures with the right conditions. They are often found in sewers and basements, particularly around pipes and drains.

They are attracted to sweets, grains, grease, and garbage debris of most anything. They have been reported to spread at least 33 kinds of bacteria and have allergens that may cause allergic reactions.

Prevention consists of good sanitation practices and removal of harborage sites under debris, wood piles and discarded materials will reduce populations near a structure. Arizona Pest Prevention can provide the sealing of cracks along with the use of a perimeter treatment with granular baits and/or a residual insecticide which will quickly reduce and eliminate a cockroach infestation.

German Cockroaches

German cockroaches are light brown in color with banded stripes across their head and grow to about 5/8 inch in length. They feed on all types of food, garbage, grease and debris. They are commonly found in residential and commercial structures, usually near kitchens and bathrooms. The German roach requires moisture regularly, has a high reproduction rate and is small enough to live in small cracks and crevices. They tend to avoid light and movement, so if you see one during daytime hours, you most likely have a larger infestation than you may think.

Baits, powders (dusts) and liquid residuals are commonly used in the control of German roaches. Contact Arizona Pest Prevention for assistance in identifying and controlling a roach infestation at 480-857-7376.

Black Widow Spiders

Female Black widow spiders are black in color with red triangular markings on her underside that often resembles an hourglass shape.

They are often found around wood piles, in boxes, pots, under eaves and in garage storage areas. They avoid light and seek prey (insects) at night. Their bite can cause severe pain as their venom is a neurotoxin which can cause paralysis, but their bite is rarely fatal to humans.

Prevention consists of good sanitation practices and removal of harborage sites of discarded materials in and around structures. Arizona Pest Prevention provides a ‘web wipe down’ on every pest service to reduce all spider populations along with the application of residual insecticide to quickly reduce and eliminate spider populations. Crickets

Crickets are brown or black in color and grow from 1 to 1 1/2 inches in length. They are a nocturnal insect that lives outdoors under rocks, woodpiles, cracks in the soil or pavement and under yard debris. They may move indoors in search of moisture or when it is too hot or too cold.

They can feed on plants, paper, linen, cotton, organic materials and anything with proteins. Only the male crickets make the chirping noise that will keep you awake at night by rubbing their wings together. They are active at night and are attracted to lights.

Prevention consists of proper landscaping maintenance around structures and removal of harborage areas. Arizona Pest Prevention can provide control and elimination with the use of residual insecticides and with granular baits. Contact us at 480-857-7376

Bees

Honeybees are social insects that are found all over the world. They are a beneficial insect because of their role in pollination of food crops, trees, shrubs and flowers. Africanized ‘Killer’ bees look identical to the traditional European honeybee to the naked eye. The only way to tell them apart is with a microscope. Killer bees will aggressively defend their colony and attack when threatened.

Bees will nest in multiple locations, needing just a small opening and void space to create a hive. Areas like small openings in block walls, under eaves, in attics, tires, crates, boxes, under storage sheds, etc. When they are swarming, they may land on a tree limb and hang there until the queen bee is ready to move on.

Africanized bees will defend they hive more aggressively then European honeybees. They attack in greater numbers which causes a greater threat to humans and pets. Never throw anything at a swarm of bees or antagonize them in any matter because of their aggressive nature. If you are chased by bees, run in a zigzag pattern and seek shelter in a house or a car and close the door behind you. Never jump into a body of water as they will wait for you to come up for air and then attack.

Only an experienced Professional should address a bee infestation. Arizona Pest Prevention provides service to safety resolve bee swarms and hives. Contact us at 480-857-7376 should the need arise.

Ants

There are over 8,000 species of ants identified throughout the world. Fortunately, there are not that many that we commonly deal with here in Arizona. Two of the common ants here are Harvester Ants and Little Black Ants.

Harvester ants are usually red in color and can grow up to _ inch long. They make large nests in the soil with mounds that are typically flat and broad and can be several feet deep. They can and do sting humans sometimes causing an allergic reaction.

Little Black Ants have become quite a nuisance in and around homes or structures. They are commonly found in homes near kitchen sinks, countertops, and in bathrooms. They feed on sweets, honeydew and other insects and are only up to 1/16 inch in length.

The most effective method for controlling ants is by baiting. Foraging ants will take the bait back to the colony where it will eventually eliminate the queen. Contact Arizona Pest Prevention for which control methods and baits may be best for your home or environment.
